Who Needs One
Most nationalities entering the Philippines for tourism qualify for visa-free entry of up to 30 days under the visa-on-arrival policy. A small number of nationalities require a 9(a) tourist visa applied for in advance at a Philippine consulate.
Eligibility
You'll need a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay, proof of onward or return travel, and sufficient funds. The full eligibility list is published on the Bureau of Immigration website (immigration.gov.ph).
How to Apply
Visa-free travelers receive a stamp on arrival at any international port of entry. 9(a) applicants apply at their nearest Philippine consulate with the application form, passport, photos, return ticket and supporting documents.
Documents
Passport, recent passport photo, completed form, return/onward ticket, proof of funds (bank statements), and the consular fee. Some consulates also require an itinerary, accommodation booking and an invitation letter if visiting friends/family.
Cost
Visa-free entry is free. The 9(a) tourist visa costs roughly -50 single-entry, -90 multiple-entry. BI extension fees inside the country: roughly ₱3,030 for the first 29-day extension, then around ₱4,000-5,000 for subsequent extensions.
Processing Time
Visa-on-arrival is instant. Consular 9(a) processing is typically 3-10 working days but varies by consulate. BI extensions take 1-3 hours if you walk in early at the main BI office in Intramuros.
Validity & Extensions
Default visa-free stay is 30 days. You can extend at the Bureau of Immigration for an additional 29 days, then in 2-month or 6-month chunks up to a maximum of 36 months total without needing to leave the country.
